{"id":2590,"date":"2009-03-16T14:24:39","date_gmt":"2009-03-16T19:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.videoproductiontips.com\/?p=2590"},"modified":"2022-05-27T15:15:23","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T20:15:23","slug":"why-jon-stewart-deserves-an-emmy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.videoproductiontips.com\/why-jon-stewart-deserves-an-emmy\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Jon Stewart Deserves an Emmy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>This article was originally published in March 2009<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And every other award we can heap upon him.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Stewart made <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jon_Stewart%E2%80%93Jim_Cramer_conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV history when he humiliated Jim Cramer on the Daily Show.<\/a>\u00a0 I don&#8217;t say this because I like to see Wienie-liars humiliated, (well, ok, I really do) but because I want to see the TV News business exposed for what it often is.\u00a0 (Not ALWAYS)<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENTERTAINMENT AND <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videoproductiontips.com\/why-reality-and-facts-matter-a-well-functioning-media-is-critical-for-freedom-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PUBLIC RELATIONS HOGWASH DISGUISED AS NEWS<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jon Stewart manages to humiliate the news media and still be a NICE GUY. Not to mention funny and adorable!\u00a0 Sigh&#8230;I am in love.<\/p>\n<p>His takedown of Cramer in 2009 wasn&#8217;t his first rodeo.\u00a0 I loved his blunt assessment of TV news on CNNs Crossfire show in 2004.\u00a0 In hindsight, this appearance seems more meaningful, given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/leaked-memo-tucker-carlson-russia-1320583\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tucker Carlson&#8217;s rise in both prominence and nefariousness.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XOYnYZKexBg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>TV News is supposed to educate the masses and shine a light on government and corporate activities.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TV News in America is pathetic these days.\u00a0 If you want to truly know at any depth what is actually going on in this world, DO NOT waste your time watching 24-hour American corporate TV news.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cc.com\/video\/fttmoj\/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-exclusive-jim-cramer-extended-interview-pt-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Original Video of The Daily Show as Jon Stewart Interviews Jim Cramer and humiliates him for being the less-than-credible source of information TV Charlatan that he is.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jim Cramer is supposed to be an expert on financial matters.\u00a0 He is supposed to be a friend to the average Joe and educate the public, so they too can take part in the complex financial markets.<\/p>\n<p>The promos on CNBC tout him as such, a trustworthy expert.\u00a0 So why have I never bothered to believe it?\u00a0 Well, because I worked in the TV news business for a long time and know first hand what a sham it can be.<\/p>\n<p>If TV news were the LEAST bit honest, Jim Cramer&#8217;s promo would read:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;Laugh with this circus clown as it imitates a hyperactive trained seal, touting the latest crock of crap Wall Street hustlers want you to believe, so they can make more money!\u00a0 No truth is revealed on this show!\u00a0 We&#8217;re just entertainers and corporate shills, after all.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jim Cramer is but one lump in the cesspool known as American TV news media. <\/strong>Right now, he is getting the brunt of criticism that the entire industry deserves.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a little unfair.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s spread some well-deserved criticism around!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l9tclPuq6TY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>I do not know Jim Cramer.\u00a0 I never worked at CNBC.<\/strong>\u00a0 But I recognize him and his ilk as I have worked with the same basic type.\u00a0 The industry has been overrun by entertainment drivel and public relations B.S. masquerading as important, intellectually-driven factual information.\u00a0 \u00a0It didn&#8217;t use to be this way.\u00a0 \u00a0TV news had much higher credibility ratings in previous decades, and more outlets actually did journalism.<\/p>\n<p>And to be clear, there are still pockets of excellence in the media.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve known dozens of hardworking-dedicated journalists who feel frustrated by the fact that upper management and corporate owners do not want them to behave as trained journals, they prefer entertainment, drama, and superficial hogwash.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the worst perpetrators within the industry pride themselves on their work and truly think they are doing a public service.\u00a0 Me?\u00a0 I hated it and railed against it every chance I got.\u00a0 I kept bringing up the good old days when the station did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videoproductiontips.com\/television-documentary-severe-head-trauma-with-explanation-of-doc-making-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">real journalism.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a journalist, I was hard core.<\/strong> I believe in factual, non-emotional, unbiased coverage of all sides of an issue.\u00a0 Think Amy Goodman and PBS shows like NOVA.\u00a0 Lucky fir me, the TV station I worked for, WSMV in Nashville, was actually quite dedicated to real journalism in the early days, but as the ownership changed, so did the news philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.videoproductiontips.com\/demand-real-journalism-why-i-embrace-dare-to-be-dull-as-a-tv-news-slogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DARE TO BE DULL<\/strong> was the news philosophy<\/a> I tried to live by in a world where &#8220;If it bleeds, it leads,&#8221; rules.\u00a0 In the early days, I was surrounded by people who largely felt the same way, even the management!\u00a0 In fact, the management pushing real journalism is why the station did what it did, which was courageous, award-winning, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tn4me.org\/sapage.cfm\/sa_id\/258\/era_id\/9\/major_id\/24\/minor_id\/78\/a_id\/243\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">superior journalism<\/a> that made a difference.\u00a0 \u00a0 As time went on and the industry morphed, I felt a tad out of place, but never wavered in my belief that real JOURNALISM is one of the bedrocks of our national identity.<\/p>\n<p>The news media is called the fourth estate in this country because smart people realize that the three branches of government need to be held accountable to the people.\u00a0 It is not going to happen on its own.\u00a0 <strong>An honest, unrestricted news media is essential to a functioning democracy. <\/strong> If the government is populated by crooks and liars, the people need the news media to tell them.\u00a0 If corporations are running rip shod over folks, people need the news media to expose it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The news media is given the unpleasant and unpopular job of tattle tale.<\/strong> No one like a tattle tale until their penchant for the truth saves our collective asses.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens when the news media gets in bed with the government and the corporations?<\/p>\n<p>You get financial meltdowns that were totally predictable, with everyone responsible screaming, &#8220;Who knew this could ever happen?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I knew.\u00a0 Many of you in the media knew too, you just weren&#8217;t willing to let everybody else in on the secret.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been in more than a few verbals wars with the people responsible screaming, &#8220;Who knew?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Guess what?\u00a0 I knew.\u00a0 Little ole me.\u00a0 <strong>Yup, news nerd me started predicting this financial collapse two years before it happened in 2008.<\/strong> I knew the Iraq war was bogus from the beginning, too.\u00a0 OMG, that one was so obvious, frankly I was shocked when more people did not see it too, but with corporate TV news blasting out the lapdog-stories, it was inevitable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is that because I am brilliant?\u00a0 Nope.<\/strong> It&#8217;s because I know portions of the news media are full of crap and I know how to recognize true, good sources of information.\u00a0 Jim Cramer is not one of them. He is a clown dressed up as a journalist.\u00a0 His act could not pass a high school journalism class.\u00a0 I used to teach high school journalism!\u00a0 He could do fine in drama class, but not journalism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the news media in the country did its job, they would have been revealing big problems in the financial industry for years now.<\/strong> Predatory lending was not a secret.\u00a0 I did a few stories on it back in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>As the TV station where I worked morphed from journalism to a more sensational &#8220;news&#8221; model, the general manager didn&#8217;t like us doing stories about topics like predatory lending and other corporate consumer rip-offs, so he made us stop.\u00a0 After all, the predatory lenders were paying advertisers.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t piss off paying advertisers by revealing their shenanigans!<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Demand Real Journalism campaign, I am going to write more articles about how the corporate news media really operates.
